I’ve just updated the Markham clan with corrections and further inputs from Rob Varley who is descended from Betsy, the only daughter of John Warburton (b.1829) and Betsy Woodcock.
John had a rather tragic life, having been widowed 4 times, before finally being outlived by his 5th wife. Even more confusing, 3 of his wives were called Elizabeth and a 4th Betsy. His first 2 wives died shortly having given birth, and the third of consumption aged 45.
John’s father Thomas is also an interesting character, having twice been the subject of a bastardy order. The first was in 1826 when he had a daughter with Mary Eden, whom he subsequently married in 1829 and had 4 more children with. However that did not stop him having a son called Job by Phylis Taylor in 1832. It was obviously a period of inflation because the costs had risen by then.
For Mary he was required to pay £1 13s 3d for the cost of the birth and maintenance to the time of the Order, 2s for the cost of his apprehension, 14s for the cost of the Order, and 1s 6d per week maintenance for as long as the child is a charge on the township.
Six years later, for Job he was required to pay £1 14s 4d for the cost of the birth and maintenance to the time of the Order, 3s for the cost of his apprehension, 16s for the cost of the Order, and 1s 8d per week maintenance for as long as the child is a charge on the township.
What began as a small family has now become a good sized clan of 264 persons with 160 Warburtons. Also it is now connected by DNA to the Warburton Village clan, by far the largest, at over 1500 persons and 1000 Warburtons, except for my own Hale Barns clan.
I have also updated the Combined Index.
