The following photos are from the story of Sergeant (later Fight Lieutenant) Leonard Arthur Warburton as told in “The Cross in the Heather”. See Issue 15 of The Button Files.
This is the type of plane in which Len was shot down over Belgium
One of the Crosses placed over the grave of Len’s 3 companions who were killed in the crash. They were Pilot Officer John Frederick Ashton, aged 22, Sergeant Ernest Lane, Observer, and Sergeant John Redden, wireless operator. These crosses were repeatedly removed by the Hitler Youth and replaced by local citizens.
A permanent monument was created after the war to all allied airmen who died over Limburg. The bodies of Len’s 3 companions were relocated to the military cemetery at Schaffen.
This was Len’s Belgian id card in the period he was being hidden in Brussels
Sergeant John Hutton also escaped the burning Wellington and evaded capture with Len. He was killed over Calais in 1944.
On his return to the UK Len trained as a pilot.
