I now have a new website. Hopefully it looks very similar to the old one.
The old website is still sitting on the old Guild of One-Name Studies server, though I took it back to how it looked on August 5th to remove all the experimentation since than. However I am expecting the Guild will implement a redirect shortly which will redirect anyone accessing the old site to the new one.
Nevertheless I would recommend you update any Bookmarks to take you directly to the new site, The url is warburtonwebsite.net.
I have changed for 2 reasons. Most importantly you have not been receiving Posts for some time now and it didn’t seem to be possible to rectify this on my Guild site. I am now following a general recommendation to implement SMPT as the safest way to send emails from a website.
The second reason was performance had become rather slow on the old site. The Guild has been battling this issue for months, blamed on interference from AI trawlers. Interestingly, although I am using the same hosting company as the Guild does, performance seems a lot better (so far) on the new site.
There were some other issues. I use WordPress as my website content manager. It uses a theme, which is a sort of prepackaged website style. The theme I used on the old site is no longer supported. I had decided to wait until it broke before changing it, but when problems do occur you don’t know if it is because the theme is broken, or some other reason. So I have updated to a more modern theme which incorporates a whole new set of editing tools, which I have been using to make the new website look like the old one.
Also the Guild hadn’t updated an element of WordPress for a while because somebody was dependent on the old version. I had a permanent warning of the dire consequences of not updating it.
Since I am working with the same hosting company they were able to migrate everything from the old site to the new. All the content from the old site is on the new, bar a couple of recent Posts about my website troubles. There is also a new Post (well post August 5th) about 2 new issues of the Newsletter.
And of course, although the notifications of Posts stopped, I still kept posting so these Posts are all on the site, as well as in the recent Newsletters. I must admit I’m not sure exactly when the notifications stopped. If someone can tell me the last Post they were notified ofI would be most interested.
The migration has not been without a few little issues. I’ve had a problem with Post and Page titles not presenting properly on narrow screens or windows. I think I’ve mitigated most of the situations. Also have an outstanding issue with the hosting company about reattaching all the relevant comments to the Posts and Pages.
If anyone comes across any issue with the site. please let me know so I can try and fix it.
Hopefully my next Post will be about Warburtons.
