I have just completed a significant update to my Hale Bars Clan. This incorporates a new branch of Warburton cousins in France, and efforts to extend my non-Warburton ancestors.
I was contacted by Karin Warburton to say she is the great grand daughter of Leonard Warburton. Leonard was hatter whose company moved him to France after the 1901 census. He married a girl from Amiens, and had 3 sons, but divorced after 30 years of marriage and returned to England in time for the 1939 Register. Karin now lives in Burgundy, only about 30 kilometres away from where my sister-in-law, who moved to France in 2007, now lives.
I was able to determine that Leonard was the great grandson of Thomas (1775-1848). Thomas existed in my Hale Barns tree as the son of George and Sarah nee Moss, but I had nothing more than his baptism. This is part of the Mobberley branch of my tree (shown in a separate chart) which descends from my 6x great grandfather’s brother John (circa 1648-1729). This makes Karin my 8th cousin, twice removed.
This has added a sizeable branch to my Warburton tree, mainly located in Macclesfield, Cheshire, and Manchester.
The other additions are to my non-Warburton lines of descent. I am keen to develop these wherever possible and I have found that Ancestry Public Trees can provide great pointers, provided you verify the sources. For example I identified Samuel Barrow as my 5x great grandfather following my paternal grandmother’s maternal line. This Samuel features in 114 Pubic Trees, though they are divided on the identity of his father. It seems that by identifying the correct father I could go aback another 2 or 3 generations. As it is I have documented the connections back to Samuel.
I was also prompted by messages about mitochondrial DNA matches to follow my mitochondrial line as far as possible. That is my maternal line through mother, grandmother, great grandmother etc. The actual matches are too ancient to help with my family tree.
I had looked at this many years ago and remember landing on a lady born in Oxfordshire, but hadn’t documented beyond my 2x great grandmother Emily Carvel. It is her mother who was born in Hook Norton, Oxfordshire circa 1833, but I can find no baptism for her. She appears in the 1841 census as an unaccompanied 8 year old in Banbury Workhouse, and her father’s details are absent from her marriage record. The answer will obviously require deeper research.
Meanwhile I had more luck with her husband, Elijah Carvell. Interestingly his father was also born in Oxfordshire, but I had more luck with his mother’s line, discovering about 5 generations of Gilkes and Humphreys. The Carvell name suggests Huguenot ancestry so this also needs further research.
Documentation of my non-Warburton ancestry is in the Papers section of the site under My Ancestry. There is an Ancestry Report and two charts, a Fan Chart and a Pedigree Chart. These lines are also included in the Hale Barns online tree.
